Portsmouth, famous for its 800-year maritime history, is one of the most interesting cities on England's beautiful south-coast. Portsmouth's Historic Naval Dockyard is one of Britain's leading tourist attractions welcoming over one million visitors a year and includes Nelson's flagship, HMS Victory, the world's first iron warship, HMS Warrior, King Henry VIII's Mary Rose and the Royal Naval Museum. In Portsmouth, you can also learn more about the history of the Royal Marines or about the secrets of the D-Day landings, watch the boats from the battlements of Henry VIII's Southsea Castle or learn about wildlife at the Natural History Museum or marine life at the Blue Reef Aquarium.

The city has literary connections too - Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle worked here as a doctor while writing his classic tales. Visit the Charles Dickens Birthplace Museum or learn about the writing of the first Sherlock Holmes stories in Portsmouth by exploring the Conan Doyle exhibition and collection in the City Museum. Jane Austen is also connected to Portsmouth (her brothers were sailors here) and wrote about it in 'Mansfield Park'. Take a daytrip to nearby Winchester and its impressive cathedral and see Jane Austen's tomb.

Portsmouth is also the UK's only island city and is a thriving seaside holiday resort with a fantastic range of entertainment, cultural and sporting facilities. The city has the sea on three sides and miles of beaches. Enjoy life relaxing on the beach at the weekend or spend time on Southsea Common, the city's extensive open parkland area near the sea.

Portsmouth is also home to the iconic Spinnaker Tower, which has a cafe and viewing platform looking out over the whole city and across to the Isle of Wight. Standing 170m tall, the tower on a clear day gives amazing views and you can see for as much as 40km.  It is located in the middle of Gunwharf Quays, a modern marina with over 95 designer outlet shops, restaurants such as Jamie Oliver's Italian, Raymond Blanc's Brasserie or Loch Fyne, seafront bars, cinema, bowling alley and nightclubs - all your entertainment needs!

The Aspex Gallery in Gunwharf Quays showcases innovative modern and contemporary visual artists from around the world in a stylish former naval storehouse. The Kings Theatre, New Theatre Royal and Groundlings Theatre have a full and varied programme of drama, opera, comedy, ballet and music throughout the year and you can often catch live theatre and comedy in smaller venues across the city too.

The city has many sporting facilities and outdoor activities for you to enjoy. You can join the university gym while at the school or go running and cycling aroung the coast or on the city's miles of cycle paths. Portsmouth has two 18-hole golf courses, several swimming pools (as well as the sea if you're feeling brave!) and opportunities to go sailing or enjoy other watersports.

The school is located in the heart of Portsmouth and in the very best area of the city: right in the middle of the university area, with the university union just 200 metres away and the university gym opposite, next to the main shopping centre, library and railway station, theatre and restaurants, and yet still within walking distance of the beach and seafront.

There are excellent communications by road and rail to London and its airports (approximately 75 minutes from Heathrow Airport and Gatwick Airport and only 20 minutes from Southampton Eastleigh Airport), and by sea to mainland Europe, with frequent ferries to Brittany (St Malo), Normandy (Caen, Cherbourg and Le Havre) and northern Spain (Bilbao and Santander). You can also take a ferry or hovercraft and go and explore the nearby tranquil countryside and laid-back charm of the Isle of Wight, easily accessible for a day trip, or take a ferry to the beautiful Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey for a relaxing long weekend.
